The John Howard Society of London and District

The John Howard Society of Ontario was founded in Toronto in 1929. The Agency's primary function during the early years of its operation was to assist men during their incarceration in Ontario prisons and following their release from prison.

The London branch, founded in 1947, was the second John Howard Society in the province of Ontario. The branch was operated by a group of dedicated citizen volunteers guided by representatives from the Toronto group until, in 1951, the first professional staff member was appointed. In 1953, the John Howard Society of London became a financially participating member of the "Community Chest of London," now known as the United Way.

Today, the John Howard Society of London is one of 18 branches in the Province of Ontario. Over the years of its existence in the community, the Agency has broadened its activities to include all phases of the correctional process from arrest to institutional discharge and plays an increasingly important role in prevention, family support and public education.
